If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you’re stepping into leadership for the first time—or hoping to soon. Congratulations. Whether you’re stepping into your first leadership role, becoming a new manager, or preparing to lead for the first time, this letter was written for you.
I don’t know your name, where you work, or the challenges you’re facing today. But I do know something about the journey ahead. Leadership is exciting, rewarding, humbling, and at times overwhelming. Nearly every leader, no matter how experienced, has quietly wondered, “Am I really ready for this?”
If you’ve ever felt that way, you’re not alone.
One of the biggest surprises about leadership is that it isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about learning, listening, serving others, and making the best decisions you can with the information you have. You won’t get everything right—and that’s okay. The leaders people respect most are rarely perfect. They’re honest, teachable, dependable, and willing to grow.
You’ll have days when your confidence is high and days when you question yourself. You’ll celebrate successes that no one else notices, and you’ll carry burdens that few people understand. That’s simply part of the privilege of leading people.
As you begin this journey, here are a few thoughts I hope you’ll carry with you:
• Character will take you farther than talent.
• Listen before you speak.
• People remember how you make them feel.
• Difficult conversations are usually the ones worth having.
• Never stop learning.
• Leadership is influence, not position.
• Your title may earn attention, but your integrity earns trust.
Most importantly, remember that leadership is not a destination. It’s a lifelong process of becoming. Every experience—both the victories and the setbacks—can shape you into the kind of leader others are grateful to follow.
I hope this letter reminds you that you don’t have to figure everything out alone. Every experienced leader once stood exactly where you are now. The difference wasn’t that they knew more. The difference was that they kept learning, kept growing, and kept showing up.
My hope for NextLeadr is simple: to encourage emerging leaders with practical wisdom, honest conversations, and lessons learned through real-world experience. From time to time, I’ll share ideas that I hope make your journey a little easier and a little more rewarding.
Before you go, I’d encourage you to ask yourself one question:
‘What kind of leader do I want people to remember me for?’
Keep that answer in front of you. Let it shape your decisions, your conversations, and your character.
